ED CRANE LETTER TO JOSÉ PIÑERA

Edward H. Crane, co-founder and president CATO Institute
[December 22, 2008]

Dr. José Piñera
President
International Center for Pension Reform
Santiago CHILE

Dear José:

As I reflect back on the year that is now drawing to a close, more than anything I am struck by the extraordinary job you have done for Cato – and more importantly for America – in helping us popularize the concept of a privatized Social Security system.

You are the Pied Piper of Social Security reform. Literally tens of millions of Latin Americans have already benefited from your tireless efforts to free them from the dependency of a government-run, pay-as-you-go retirement scheme.

Over the last several years you have brought that energy to the United States where you have enlightened literally thousands of business and civic leaders around the country. In addition, of course, you’ve had a real and positive impact on the White House and on Congress.

Your commitment, good humor, and persuasiveness make you a unique force in this incredibly important battle. And for you to do so only for expenses makes you a real hero of the Revolution!

Thank you for everything, José. Please know that we are honored to have you as an ally and look forward to working with you in the crucial months ahead.

Feliz Navidad!

Cordially,

Edward H. Crane
